The Maggini Quartet are no strangers to Cockermouth audiences. We expected excellence and we were not disappointed. A new player, Ciaran McCabe, appeared as second violin and fitted in seamlessly, working in fine style with first violin, Julian Leaper. A Haydn Quartet was followed by Bridge’s First String Quartet and, here, the Maggini Quartet seemed to go into top gear with a wonderful rendering of what is a truly great work. We were reminded that England has produced composers that can match the abilities of those from any other country. Solo moments from violist Martin Outram and cellist Michal Kasnowski were a bonus and then Beethoven’s String Quartet Op 18 No 1 gave us a grand and satisfying finale.
